Funkwerk Enterprise Communications: Trouble-free Fax Communication Made Available in Virtualized Environments for the First Time
The free-of-charge update for the bintec media gateways permits fax communication in virtualized IT infrastructures via remote CAPI interfaces.
Funkwerk Enterprise Communications (FEC) is the first vendor to implement trouble-free fax communication in virtualized environments. In combination with a DSP module, release 7.8.4 supplements the routers of the R1200/R3000/R4100 series with the T.30 fax protocol, a standard of the analog and ISDN world. In this scenario, the so-called remote CAPI interface acts as a translator between the virtual fax server and the ISDN interface in the media gateway. The release for the bintec media gateways is now available on the Web site of Funkwerk Enterprise Communications, a company of Funkwerk AG, and can be downloaded free of charge. As the first software vendor, the unified communications provider serVonic has certified the trouble-free interaction of the bintec media gateways with its unified messaging solution IXI-UMS. Further certifications are currently being prepared by Funkwerk Enterprise Communications.

Virtualized Fax Server Meets ISDN
Up to now, companies did not have an opportunity to virtualize their complete server environments including the fax servers and to use the benefits entailed consistently for their complete server infrastructures. These benefits comprise a better utilization of the existing devices, less hardware, and lower power consumption. The reason is: the fax servers communicate with the public telephone network POTS via ISDN plug-in modules. Virtualization platforms, however, do not provide any drivers for these plug-in modules. The so-called remote CAPI, in contrast, provides the fax server with the ISDN ports built into the bintec media gateways via the normal corporate LAN. The remote CAPI belongs to the standard equipment of the media gateways of FEC. It permits CTI and CAPI services, such as PC fax or PC call answering machine, to be performed at workplaces in the local network.

Benefits also for Non-Virtualized Fax Servers
The T.30 implementation in the bintec media gateways also offers significant benefits for non-virtualized server environments. In the past, for the operation of a fax server the ISDN plug-in module had to be built in into the fax server in question and the corresponding drivers had to be installed. In the case of problems—for instance a module exchange or extension—the complete server always had to be shut down. With the bintec remote CAPI, however, all maintenance jobs can be performed at the fax server during operation. This means a reboot is no longer necessary.
Interaction with IXI-UMS by serVonic.

The unified communications provider serVonic has already certified Funkwerk Enterprise Communications as its technology partner on the sector of communications hardware. By doing so, the company certifies that the bintec media gateways interact in a trouble-free and faultless mode with its own unified messaging solution IXI-UMS.
