So the UMTS connection can serve as a back-up line for a DSL connection. This makes sense if the bandwidth of an alternative ISDN connection is insufficient. The reliable back-up of the primary Internet access is especially important if continuous real-time data, for instance from production, have to be transmitted from a remote location to the head office. Furthermore, the bintec R1200wu allows data acquisition from or connection to mobile applications. In public transportation, an operating company can implement real-time timetable monitoring, for example, with the aid of wireless data transmission via the air interface. It continuously transmits up-to-date passenger information, such as arrival times or vehicle faults to the relevant information systems.

A digital signal processor (DSP) slot is available for the use of the router as a VoIP media gateway; the implemented SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) proxy permits the operation of IP telephones in a network and registration with the Voice-over-IP (VoIP) provider. As a wireless router, the bintec R1200wu supports 802.11a/b/g/h standards and WPA/WPA2 is implemented for backing up the WLAN connection. Moreover, the device permits the secure connection of external sites via VPN (Virtual Private Network).
