Fixed-Mobile Convergence with the High-speed Router from Funkwerk Enterprise Communications
UMTS Internet access with the bintec R1200wu high-speed router
Media transition from wireless to wired data traffic and vice versa is of increasing importance: Fixed-mobile convergence allows numerous new applications to be achieved that previously failed due to the costs of a purely wired solution. The UMTS router bintec R1200wu from Funkwerk Enterprise Communications (FEC) opens the way for media transition between UMTS and xDSL. Via a UMTS card, the router is capable of establishing a fast online connection therefore facilitating smooth data traffic even at remote locations without a DSL or ISDN connection. The UMTS connection can also be configured to back-up existing Internet access. Funkwerk Enterprise Communications GmbH, a Funkwerk AG company, developed the UMTS router in response to the enormous demand from customers and partners who deploy it in production, for example. The bintec R1200wu looks after all the regular routing functions in the network – so the UMTS interface benefits all network clients.

The UMTS connection serves as the primary Internet access at locations where no DSL is available. HSDPA/HSUPA data connections up to 7.2 Mbps are also possible via this interface. Besides switching to the UMTS/GSM network, the bintec R1200wu masters the transition to the xDSL and ISDN network – the interface diversity ensures high availability for data transmission. So the UMTS connection can serve as a back-up line for a DSL connection. This makes sense if the bandwidth of an alternative ISDN connection is insufficient. The reliable back-up of the primary Internet access is especially important if continuous real-time data, for instance from production, have to be transmitted from a remote location to the head office. Another example is transmission of data from a video surveillance system.

Furthermore, the bintec R1200wu allows data acquisition from or connection to mobile applications. In public transportation, an operating company can implement real-time timetable monitoring, for example, with the aid of wireless data transmission via the air interface. It continuously transmits up-to-date passenger information, such as arrival times or vehicle faults to the relevant information systems.

A digital signal processor (DSP) slot is available for the use of the router as a VoIP media gateway; the implemented SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) proxy permits the operation of IP telephones in a network and registration with the Voice-over-IP (VoIP) provider. As a wireless router, the bintec R1200wu supports 802.11a/b/g/h standards and WPA/WPA2 is implemented for backing up the WLAN connection. Moreover, the device permits the secure connection of external sites via VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Key features of bintec R1200wu:
•WLAN 802.11a/b/g/h
•4+1 port switch
•2 x ISDN (switchable), remote CAPI
•VPN IPSec/PPtP integrated with hardware acceleration
•10 IPSEC tunnels (maximum 110), including hardware acceleration
