bintec X2250 WLAN router now available from Funkwerk Enterprise Communications
Professional WLAN and routing technology

NUREMBERG. Funkwerk Enterprise Communications GmbH, a Funkwerk AG company, has combined an extensive range of routing functions with wireless network access for the first time: in the bintec X2250. The high-speed router supports the 802.11g standard in the WLAN and enables a data rate of up to 54 Mbps, providing home offices and teleworkers with secure access to the corporate network via the VPN. With this new offer, Funkwerk Enterprise Communications GmbH aims to target particularly smaller enterprises and branch offices that need a powerful, flexible remote access solution.
The bintec X2250 comes with five IPSec tunnels. A license can be purchased for the activation of additional tunnels, as needed.

The bintec X2250 can be operated via the two integrated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interfaces to ADSL and SDSL lines as well as within a network. The WLAN router is based on the IEEE 802.11g standard and transmits data at 54 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz frequency range. Since the device is also compatible with the 802.11b standard (transmission rate of 11 Mbps), it is possible to implement the bintec X2250 in existing infrastructures. Another highlight in the WLAN environment is the antenna diversity function, which provides for optimum WLAN reception even under difficult reception conditions.

Extensive range of security features

Secure data transmission places particularly high demands on the air interface. In addition to such security standards as access lists, WEP and WPA, the bintec X2250 is also equipped with an extensive range of firewall mechanisms as well as the implemented Virtual Private Network (VPN) to guarantee secure network access. Since the router supports the WPA enterprise mode and WPA-PSK, it is equally well suited to use in corporate networks with their own Radius servers or in SOHO environments. Furthermore, encryption is possible using the IPSec standard with 3DES and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) as well as via the radio interface, which can be secured additionally with the stateful inspection firewall.

Multi-SSID: Definition of different user groups

In the past, you could not define more than one WLAN per wireless interface, clearly classified by the SSID (Service Set Identifier). Because the bintec X2250 now supports multi-SSID, however, it is possible to define several WLANs per interface to allow for different security requirements for each different WLAN. When assigned their own SSID, user groups can be allowed different privileges. Depending on the requirements, it is possible to individually determine the form of authentication or encryption. Using the bintec X2250, for example, you can set up internal network access via a MAC filter and WPA Radius authentication parallel to unencrypted Internet access.

Key features of the bintec X2250

  • Support of the 802.11g standard
  • Encryption: access lists, WEP, WPA (WPA2 in preparation), 3DES and AES
  • Multi SSID
  • IPSec over WLAN
